When we visited Ghent the other year, Bebeth, my travel buddy showed me a unique carving on top of building which apparently was featured in the books I bought about the city.

The demi-relief was found on top of the Municipal prison which they call “Gemeenteljike Gevangenis”. This was adjacent to th Hall towers and its facade dates from 1741.

The art work represents the Ancient Roman, Cimon. Cimon was sentenced to death by starvation and was nursed by his daughter.

Hence the popular name of “De Mammelokker” (allurer of maidens) that was given to this building.
